The National Stock Exchange (NSE) also reported a 3.1% month-on-month rise in active clients. Key discount brokers experienced varied performance, with Groww seeing a significant 5.4% monthly increase to 1.09 crore clients.
According to a report by Motilal Oswal Financial Services, the total number of Demat accounts surged to 16.2 crore in June 2024.
New account additions spiked by 42 lakh, marking the highest rate since February 2024, with a 4.24% increase from the previous month and a 34.66% rise compared to the previous year. Demat account additions were 36 lakh a month ago and 23.6 lakh a year ago, with FY25 averaging a 34 lakh monthly growth rate.
June's additions represent the fourth instance of exceeding 4 million new accounts, with previous milestones in December 2023, January 2024, and February 2024.
CDSL increased its market share in total Demat accounts month-on-month, while NSDL experienced a decline of 420 basis points in total Demat accounts and 620 basis points in incremental accounts year-on-year.
MOSL noted a 3.1% month-on-month rise in NSE active clients, reaching 4.42 crore by June 2024. The top five discount brokers now command 64.4% of total NSE active clients, up from 58.2% in June 2022.
Zerodha saw a 2.1% increase in clients to 77 lakh, while Groww’s clients rose by 5.4% to 1.09 crore, boosting its market share to 24.7%.
Angel One and Upstox reported increases of 3.4% and 2.7%, respectively. Traditional brokers ICICI Securities and IIFL Securities saw modest client growth of 0.8% and 0.6%, respectively, with minor declines in market share.
BSE's Futures & Options (F&O) average daily turnover (ADTO) increased by 15% month-on-month, contributing to a total ADTO rise of 9%. NSE's ADTO also grew by 17.1%.
BSE’s market share in the total cash turnover segment increased to 7.2% in June 2024, up from 6.4% in May 2024, while its share in options notional turnover fell slightly to 22%.
Total volumes on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) decreased by 10.7% month-on-month to ₹36.6 lakh crore in June 2024. OPTFUT volumes declined by 9.7% to ₹31.4 lakh crore.
Despite this, overall ADTO increased by 2.7% to ₹1.8 lakh crore, driven by a rise in Options ADTO, particularly in Crude Oil, Natural Gas, and Silver, while Gold ADTO saw a significant 46% decline.
These insights highlight dynamic shifts in market participation and trading volumes amid evolving investor preferences and market conditions.
